Burnham & Dells is uniquely positioned to serve as a comprehensive solution-provider for complex wealth management needs. We believe that we have differentiated our practice capabilities and philosophical approach with our following core competencies:
Extensive experience: Burnham & Dells has helped its clients navigate various capital market and economic cycles
Disciplined investment processes: We utilize a formal Investment Committee structure to provide consistent due diligence and portfolio construction.
Strategic investment approach: We offer strategic solutions for most client portfolios that are consistent with their investment horizons.
Expansive opportunity sets: We utilize diverse investment solutions in constructing portfolios for clients seeking to achieve substantial risk diversification.
Integrated approach: We incorporate our decisions with those of your accountant, attorney, or other trusted advisors to provide integrated wealth management
Burnham & Dells provides client-tailored investment solutions. We focus not only on return generation, but also risk diversification. We also dynamically assess our current strategic portfolio solutions against recent financial market and macroeconomic developments that may alter our longer term market views. Core concepts are:
Strategic: using longer-term investment horizons, incorporating efficient portfolio solutions over projected full economic and capital market cycles.
Expansive: emphasizing global investment sets across both traditional (e.g., equities and fixed income) and alternative asset strategies (e.g., real estate, commodities, master limited partnerships).
Risk diversification: attempting to identify and to diversify key macro risks that are likely to contribute materially to portfolio return volatilities.
Dynamic developments: identifying and understanding recent valuation, market and macroeconomic trends and their impact on our strategic, longer-term return and risk estimates for client portfolios.
Burnham & Dells implements fundamental, long-term themes to develop client portfolios. We proactively evaluate possible asset class re-allocations within the context of previously unanticipated market and economic developments. These periodic reassessments provide a flexibility to adjust our optimal portfolio solutions to incorporate recent market developments, viewed as having long-term return and volatility impacts.
We have researched and identified our recommended solutions and strategies through the application of independent, objective quantitative research providers as a preliminary screen, in conjunction with the due diligence processes of our own qualitative analysis.
We may use a combination of passive and active management. Solutions may involve individual equities, bonds, open-end mutual funds, closed-end mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETF), exchange-traded notes (ETN), master limited partnerships and private commingled funds.
Our equity strategy is tailored for each client's specific goals, focusing on their risk and return objectives. We construct the equity portion of a client's portfolio using various investment options available to us, such as mutual funds (e.g. Dimensional Fund Advisors), ETF's (exchange traded funds) and individual stocks. Each investment option is selected based on a proprietary set of criteria, used to provide our clients with what we believe are the best quality investment opportunities. Our research is conducted in-house, with the emphasis on teamwork, discipline and process.

We work with our clients to ensure the desired goals of their retirement plan offerings are being met. Burnham & Dells understands that compliance with both regulatory changes and recent industry trends is not just important, but mandatory, for retirement plan success. Our consultants' understanding of ERISA plans and their compliance needs are an integral part of our consulting expertise.
We can assist you in addressing compliance and operational issues with your retirement plan including regulatory changes, potential risks, low employee plan participation, and nondiscrimination testing complexities. Our continual plan evaluation will help you monitor your plan, while looking to eliminate or mitigate any potential problems.
Burnham & Dells defined benefit services include plan design, funding considerations, working with plan sponsors' investment committee to meet their needs, custom portfolio construction, and employee education. Burnham & Dells will work with the plan sponsor's investment committee and actuaries to fully understand the current and future liabilities of the plan. At that point, we will review the plan's current portfolio to determine how the plan's liabilities match against its assets, and whether the current risk/return profile will fulfill the plan's goals.
During our portfolio construction process we help our clients understand the risks in various equity/bond mixes and enhance the performance of their portfolios through diversification into new asset classes. With no proprietary investment restrictions, we can utilize our intensive in-house manager research process to choose the best low-cost investments and increase the success of meeting your plan's goals. Our framework and understanding of the long-term objectives of your defined benefit plan ensure that your plans function optimally and are supported by a proper governance structure.
Burnham & Dells is able to serve as a discretionary investment manager, or ERISA 3(38) fiduciary to select and monitor plan investments. In this capacity, we partner with our clients to transfer the fiduciary responsibility from the plan's oversight committee to Burnham & Dells. The benefit to plan sponsor fiduciaries of doing this is to avoid liability associated with the selection and monitoring of investments in the plan. Plan fiduciaries who appoint an ERISA 3(38) investment manager to control the selection and monitoring of the plan's underlying investments are responsible only for the prudent choice and oversight of the ERISA 3(38) investment manager, which becomes a much more manageable task for attentive fiduciaries.
The The Burnham & Dells team takes a "participant-centric" approach to Plan participants. We believe every retirement plan participant should have a savings and investment plan as well as affordable access to an unbiased investment professional to implement and manage it. Our team approach focuses on helping you increase participation rates while helping your participants achieve their retirement goals.
Your employees have a choice in how to successfully develop and manage a long-term savings and investment strategy. Success of your plan is measured in part by the level of their participation and deferrals. To assist your employees, our client service consultants are available to conduct interactive meetings that will focus on the steps for successful investing:
Step 1: assessing each participant's retirement income needs through Gap analysis
Step 2: developing a savings plan
Step 3: developing an investment plan
Step 4: staying on track
We work with you in developing and refining your investment objectives and Investment Policy Statement to minimize your liabilities and create an optimal investment lineup for the plan and, in turn, the plan participants. One of the more important tasks in creating an investment lineup is to identify investment managers who consistently meet their fund's objectives. Our in-house manager selection process utilizes a quantitative model to rank investment managers within their respective categories. We complement that process with an in-depth and comprehensive qualitative review. Burnham & Dells adheres to thorough fiduciary practices throughout our approach to investment manager search, selection, and monitoring. Whatever your retirement plan needs, we have the investment expertise and plan knowledge to support all of your objectives.
There are many difficulties and questions that arise during plan transition, consolidation, or merger to a new provider or investment manager. Our knowledge and experience in plan transition and integration allows us to provide your company with the support necessary for a seamless transition.
Our professionals will plan your proposed move with an unparalleled attention to detail. We will provide a project timeline and manage the transition to ensure that the necessary documents and data are processed expediently and correctly. Throughout the transition we will communicate all aspects of the process to assure a successful plan transition and integration.
At Burnham & Dells, we understand that objective and independent vendor search and analysis are a key aspect of a successful retirement plan. In performing vendor searches, we focus on full disclosure of plan fees and services offered and whether these fees represent a fair value for the quality of service offered when compared to industry benchmarks. A fiduciary review of your retirement plan program is an essential step to make sure that your employees are receiving the best benefit plan available. We utilize a 7-step Provider Search & Selection process that will ensure vendor compatibility with your company's objectives. Services available include:
Request for Proposal (RFP) design and management
Vendor and plan benchmarking
